Treatment- Pop it
Treatment
POP IT
Lauren McKay
Synopsis
‘Pop it’ is a music magazine that is stereotypical to my chosen audience and what I believe that age group would enjoy reading, I will try to keep it girly and colourful whilst also producing a music magazine that I believe they would enjoy to read.
Detail of target audience.
My target audience is 7-14 year old girls. The reason I have chose to aim my magazine at such a specific audience is because in my opinion there aren’t many music magazines for their specific age group and so I believe there is a gap in the market for a magazine like Pop it. The reason that I have chosen to use colours such as pink and purple is because stereotypically this is the colour that young girls prefer. My target audience are easily influenced due to their age and so they look up to celebrities such as Miley Cirus and Sugarbabes this is why I believe that they are likely to watch television channels such as Disney where films such as High School Musical are shown. Due to them being at the age where they are unable to work, parents would be the ones who will be buying them the magazine or it could be the child’s pocket money, meaning it needs to be appropriate for the age group other wise the parents wont buy it and it also needs to be affordable. Generally with magazines that are aimed at a similar audience to mine, they include a free gift such as lip-gloss or stickers which is something to keep in mind when making my front cover.
I think a plain pink, purple or very light blue background would work well for the front cover of my magazine as this way the audience can focus on the feature band themselves and also the colours pink and purple connote feminism. My feature actors will be 3 girls who are in a pop group. The front cover shot will be a medium close up shot. My three actors will all have something different about them and a unique star quality, for example one of the girls who has bleach blonde hair will be the lead singer and she will appear to have a large, bubbly personality, whereas another singer who has brown hair will appear quieter and more shy. I think making the actors all have different personalities and different appearances is incredibly important as it is the girl group who will be attracting the audience to the magazine.

Contents page
However in my contents page there will also be images of feature band, it will be the largest image on the contents page in order to grab the readers attention; the girls will look more relaxed and happy, it will be a very friendly shot, as my audience will admire the group and want to be like them.
Double page spread
I will include several photos on the double page, 3 of which will be each band member by themselves. I intend for one of the photos on the double page spread to show the girls laughing and smiling with each other so that it appears as if they are all best friends, this is because stereotypically, girls aged 7-14 are very concerned with their best friends. The girls will be sat down for this so I think that the prop that would be most useful would be a sofa as it makes them look like they are all together and actually part of a group. In this shot they will be wearing clothes similar to The Saturdays style, which is quite girly but also grown up, for example skirts and dresses with rather bright colours. I will also take a photo of the girl group at a sleepover because this is one of the things that young girls like to do. For this, I will need props such as pink pillows, makeup, pop corn in a bowl, eye masks and duvet covers or sleeping bags. In this shot the girl group will be wearing pyjamas as this has connotations of a sleepover so it would help the readers to understand the image more.
Interview/Article
For my double page spread I will do an article of the girl group, the style of the writing will be very chatty and informal, the article will feature questions about their music such as ‘Is …. Song written about a boyfriend?’ , this is in keeping with the tone of the magazine which is girly. I won’t use large vocabulary or complicated lexis as my target audience is rather young. The lead singer will be the one who answers the most questions as it is the lead singer who most people are interested in and would want to know more about.
I have done research into the layout of my magazine, I have regularly purchased Top Of The Pops magazine in order to get inspiration and to look at what kind of font and writing styles they use as I am targeting a similar audience to Top Of The Pops. Although Top Of The Pops has no contents page, I was able to look at other magazines and see how they fitted the style of the magazine with the genre of music and audience they were targeting.

Health and Saftey
My lighting will be bright so that I get good, clear images but the lighting won't be too strong as I dont want to hurt my actresses eyes. I will make sure that all wires are kept tidy and out of the way of my actresses as I don't want them to trip and fall. I'm not using any sharp objects as props as it would be a health and saftey hazzard.

Friday 13th March Starter Task
Picture 1- Landcape, not looking at camera, took randomly, not medium close up, lots going on, messy. Picture 2- Not the rule of thirds, building has more importance, its a low angle shot so makes them look weak. Picture 3- Colours of background clash, they are full body, not enough space for mast head, not a medium close up, too dark, staring into space, not looking at camera. Picture 4- High angle shot, needs to be medium close up, too dark, they are too far up, messy. Picture 5- Not looking at camera, cuts off his arm and guitar, guitar blends into background, very dark, not a lot of thought.
5 Rules for taking a good cover photograph
1. No cluttered backgrounds.
2. Make sure you focus on the lead singer if it is a band shot so the audience know who they are.
If it's a single artist make sure its a medium close up shot.
3. A 3/4 image may be good not centered.
Leave room for a masthead (and don't cut off heads).
4. No high angle shots- they make bad cover images. Fine for double page spread, poor for covers.
5. Animate your band- make sure they look at the camera.

Feedback of Magazine Names
During the feed back session we discussed our ideas for magazine title names.
For a rock magazine the ideas that were thought of were: The pick, Crank.
For a pop magazine an idea that I came up with for my magazine was Pop it.

Target for the 10th March
My target for the 10th March is to complete Appendix 4 and Appendix 5. I will attend subject subject workshop on the 10th.
Appendix 5
Example 1
The target audience for my magazine will be a mainstream audience that is targeted at both males and females that are aged 16-24. The reason I have chosen both males and females is because I believe that the music that will feature in my magazine will appeal to both sexes and also they will both be able to relate to it.
The sub genre of the magazine will be Indie music with bands such as The Arctic Monkeys featuring in it.
The magazine title will be Pick as the reader would immediatly recognise that a puck is what you can play guitars with, and therefore they would understand what the magazine is about due to the connotations of the name.
An idea for the main cover image would be a medium close up of the band looking quite arragant.
For the splash article I would do an interview with a new up and coming artist, giving information on them and their music and how they feel about their new rise to fame.
In the contents, I would also include pictures of other bands and artists that feature throughout the magazine. reviews of the latest indie music and other interviews with bands.
Example 2
The target audience for my magazine will be mainstream because the music is quite a popular genre and therefore would appeal to a wide audience.
The genre I have chosen is pop.
I will aim my magazine at 10-16 year old females as in my experience it is mainly females who are interesed in this genre. Examples of artists who would feature in this magazine are: Girls Aloud, Sugarbabes, Westlife and Beyonce.
The magazine title will be Pop it.
An idea for the main cover image would be a girl band who are looking at the camera in a slightly sexy way, they would look very happy and appear to have the ideal life, therefore girls would view them as their ideal self.
For the splash article would be an interview with either a band or solo artist, in the interview it would include information about their love life, fashion, gossip and their music.
In the contents I would include pictures of other artists and explain what else would feature in the magazine.
Example 3
The target audience for my magazine will be mainstream meaning that it would have both high circulation and readership figures.
The genre that I have chosen is R 'n' B.
I intend to specically target both males and females who are around the age of 15- 23. Examples of the types of artists who would feature in the magazine are: Ne-yo, Rihanna and Akon.
The magazine title would be
An idea for the main cover image is that it would be a photo of a male artist who is wearing some kind of jewelry, this would connote his wealth and success and therefore readers would see him as their ideal self or partner.
For the splash page I would do and interview with an artist, discussing perhaps a possible tour or new duet, and find out how and what made them want to be a r 'n' b singer.
In the contents I would welcome the reader to the magazine, and then explain what the magazine would constist of, this includes music news such as when artists go on tour, interviews and reviews.

Starter task- Mainstream and niche products. 6th March 2009
A mainstream product is something that targets a wide audience, it has high circulation and high readership figures. An example of this is Q.
Wheras a niche product is something that is specifically targeted at a smaller, more specific audience, it has a smaller circulation and smaller readership figures. An example of this is Classic Guitar.

Appedix 4
Bauer magazines-
Bauer is the largest independant magazine company in europe, it has a wide range of magazines including music magazines such as Kerrang, Mojo, and Q.
The sub genre of Kerrang is rock, this can be seen clearly because of the type of bands that are featured in the magazine such as Metalica, and the connotations of the colours that are used. Kerrang is a mainstream magazine that is targeted at a wide audience.
The sub genre of Mojo is alternative it doesnt specically have one type of music, for example it features indie and rock. In my opinion it is a mainstream magazine due to the fact it doesnt just have one type of music.
The sub genre of Q is alternative because it includes different artists from different genres.
